“I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”

— Oscar Wilde

“Altesa recently presented a 1 hour creative writing workshop at our library. The workshop was well attended and the teens enjoyed participating- I’d definitely recommend Altesa’s workshop-she was well prepared, engaging and enthusiastic.”

Hi There. I am Altesa Baker.

I enjoy teaching classes that are fun, "out of the box" and require participation! My classes are generally centered around Arts and Education since my professional and personal background includes performance as an Actor, Storyteller and Writer. In addition to 20 years experience connecting youth to academics, life-skills and confidence through the arts as a teaching artist in schools and theaters, tutor and private coach, I am also a homeschool mom of 2 boys for the last 8 years.

I've earned my MFA in Acting from the Actor's Studio Drama School, NYC and BA in Social Work from Rutgers University, NJ and bring a combination of these disciplines to my interactions. I believe learning is more effective when people are given the freedom to process through application.

Education is active and continual. It's also subjective- unique to your child's interests, personality and learning style. I take this into account when instructing. I value your child’s perspective and encourage they use and find their "voice" in my classes. The highest compliment is when a child is asking questions, forming and sharing their opinions. It means they are engaged, thinking and processing and that makes me Happy! With that said, my goal is to stir the pot of possibility engaging minds and hearts through inspired information, conversation and activity. I look forward to getting to know you and becoming a part of your child’s artistic journey.

I am an Inspire Charter Vendor and welcome homeschool, private, public and charter school families to explore my coaching, course and camp offerings. Should you have any questions about scheduling, how classes can be customized and payment options feel free to contact me directly.

Fun Fact: My family is in a commercial running on TV and in movie theaters. Check it out below.

Intro to Acting, “Role Play” Class for Parents

Fridays, 2:00pm, FREE

Parents of children who are passionate about acting and performance are invited to get to know the most significant tools of the trade in this 1 day, 1hour, interactive class for free. Join other parents in getting the lowdown on what it is that makes Acting an appealing craft.

Class Experience and Description

So, your child has shown a real interest in acting. Beyond learning lines and a final performance, what does it really take to act? This starter/introductory class orients the new, curious, beginner and passionate actor (and parents) to the fundamentals of acting from process to performance. This class is a great orientation for your child if they are interested in participating in a longer, more thorough 4 week Acting class. Group activities followed by a question and answer ushers your child through important tools of the trade.

QUESTIONS

Is this a real acting class?

Yes. This is a real acting class that I teach to real children interested in the arts. Except that I am extending it to parents. Participation is required. It’s not a lecture or question and answer session, although room will be made for questions at the end as I do at the end of every Intro to Acting Orientation. It is an opportunity to connect with your child’s interest by learning about it first hand. It’s also a way to get to know me, my teaching style and what a class could look like if you enrolled your child in one of my courses.

Do I have to enroll my child to participate?

You do not have to enroll your child in a course to participate. You do, however, must be a parent of a child that’s interested in the art of acting/performing to participate.

What do you mean by Role play?

Role Play simply involves you taking on the heart of your child during this class. Once you enter the Zoom room you are a 9 year old, 12 year old, 17 year old; whatever the age of your child at the time. You are a lover of the art form and ready to engage as they would be.

What if I think this would be a great class for my child, too?

Intro to Acting: Role Play for Parents is a free class for Parents Only. If you’d like to have your child take the Intro to Acting Orientation on a separate occasion with their peers, I hold those sessions, Saturdays 9 am-10 am for $15.00. In appreciation to your commitment to learning about the field, there’s a 5.00 discount to parents who have braved and completed the free class.

I am not interested in taking the free class but I’d like to sign up my child.

Parents can sign up their child for the Intro to Acting Orientation using the Enroll tab in the menu. Note: The cost of the class is $15.00 when enrolled independent of participating in the Intro to Acting, Role Play.
